Shokunin by Chef Darren MacLean Marks 10 Years with Landmark 12-Chef Event
On Monday 23 February 2026, Calgary's acclaimed Japanese restaurant Shokunin celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a one-night-only culinary collaboration designed to make a national and international impact.
Titled "X SHOKUNIN X: A Night of Too Many Chefs", the event united 12 internationally recognised chefs for an ambitious 10-course dinner, welcoming just 30 guests for an intimate evening reflecting a decade of global exchange, creative leadership and cultural influence.
A Decade of Defining Calgary's Dining Scene
Founded in 2016 by award-winning chef-restaurateur Darren MacLean, Shokunin has played a defining role in shaping Calgary's contemporary culinary identity.
Over the past ten years, the restaurant has appeared on Canada's 100 Best Restaurants list every year, built what is widely regarded as the country's most exclusive sake programme, established itself as Canada's first binchotan-fuelled yakitori restaurant and hosted more Michelin- and World's 50 Best-affiliated chefs than any other restaurant in Canada.
Beyond accolades, Shokunin has consistently positioned Calgary within the global culinary conversation, demonstrating how a regional restaurant can operate with international reach.
X SHOKUNIN X: A Statement, Not Just a Celebration
The anniversary dinner was conceived not simply as a milestone event, but as a statement of intent.
Priced at $500 per guest (inclusive of tax and service), the evening included a welcome cocktail and ceremonial sake toast, alongside 50% off all wine, sake and cocktail pours. Visiting sommeliers and mixologists also presented a selection of speciality sake cocktails designed specifically for the occasion.
Collectively, the participating chefs hold four Michelin stars, multiple Canada's 100 Best and Canada's 50 Best appearances, recognition from the World's 50 Best Bars awards, and alumni credentials from leading global kitchens. The result was an evening designed to reflect the collaborative ethos and cultural dialogue that have defined the brand since day one.
With only 30 seats available and no repeat performance planned, the event created scarcity, urgency and high cultural value, positioning it as one of Canada's most significant dining moments of 2026.
Culinary Innovation Beyond the Restaurant
Chef Darren MacLean leads Canada's only restaurant group with three concepts ranked on Canada's 100 Best Restaurants list, including EIGHT (ranked number 6), NUPO (ranked number 30) and Shokunin (ranked number 74).
His international profile has been further strengthened through recognition at The Best Chef Awards in Milan where him and EIGHT were awarded One Knife – EXCELLENT, and an appearance on The Final Table, reinforcing his position as one of Canada's most influential and outspoken chef-restaurateurs.
Why This Matters
In today's dining landscape, milestone moments are no longer retrospective: they are forward-facing brand platforms. X SHOKUNIN X demonstrates how:
- Anniversary programming can generate national conversation
- Cross-border chef collaboration drives cultural relevance
- Scarcity-led experiences amplify PR impact
- Regional restaurants can command global attention
As Shokunin enters its second decade, this event signals continued ambition, not just for the restaurant, but for Calgary's place on the international culinary stage.
